How to Pick a Service Dog

A service dog can be a blessing to someone who really needs help with everyday tasks due to a medical issue or disability. However, it is not a simple task to pick a potential service dog. Here, we will talk about popular service dog breeds. We will tell you all about the particular service dog demeanor that all trainers should strive for when selected a puppy to train. Lastly, we will inform you about service dog intelligence. After reading this article, choosing the right service dog should be a cinch.

Service Dog Breeds

Although a miniature Yorkie does not make a good service animal, they make great emotional support and therapy dogs. There are a few popular service dog breeds out there. Consider the genetics of the dog, the trainer and breeder, along with the overall dog smarts. For some patients, considerations like allergies and other issues may also come into play. Common service dog breeds include, but are not limited to:

·        Labradors
·        Dobermans
·        Poodle
·        Bichon Frise
·        Labradoodle
·        Schnauzer
·        Shih Tzu
·        Italian Greyhounds

Service Dog Demeanor

What is the perfect service dog demeanor? They need to be calm, cool, and collective. Service dogs must be focused at all time. Things that would distract typical dogs like other animals, vehicles, other people, food or trash on the street, or loud noises must not distract them at all. You must also take care to choose a dog that is not easily angered or frustrated. These dogs must have a demeanor that is constant and rock solid. Health issues cannot be a common problem. Nor can things like anxiety. They must also always be willing to learn something new to help their owners, no matter how trivial the task.

Service Dog Intelligence

We believe that the last sentence in the service dog demeanor section sums it up. Service dogs have to be very intelligent. By training an already intelligent breed who has a certain temperament, you will most likely get an intelligent dog. For budding training, temperament and Volhard testing can be done to evaluate the intelligence and overall service dog demeanor of a dog. A service dog that is constantly learning, always curious, but calm and cool is very hard to find. This is why some people pay lots of money for already trained dogs, or choose to not choose and train them themselves.

Poker Playing Yorkie Jilli Dog Passes at 17

RICK CARAN and his famous Yorkshire Terrier  JILLI DOG entertained audiences around the world with wildly wonderful Poker Card Tricks!  Sadly, Jilli passed  on recently, at age 17.

Rick said on Facebook: "Good Night Sweet Jilli Dog Sept 1998 - Sept 2014.
My Sweet Jilli Dog, I don't know what I did to deserve such a blessing in my life, as you, but I will love you, and miss you, forever... My heart is breaking, and I could fill volumes about your sweet and gentle nature, and the hearts you touched, and SMILES that you have spread, but I am tired, it's been a long and very sad day, so I am going to sleep now, and dream about how you changed my life, showed me unconditional love, and brought me, and so many others such amazing joy... I cherish the day you walked into my life, those 16 years ago, a sickly pup from the street, and you turned it upside down... It's been a great ride... Thank you..."

Heartbreaking to lose our children.  :-(

Missing Yorkie from Texas Found in Indianapolis

These stories are so unbelievable!

A 10-year-old Yorkie has turned up in Indianapolis    SIX YEARS  after he disappeared from his comfortable home in Austin, Texas, reports WTHR in Indianapolis.  (1100  miles  away!)

A kind passerby saw the forlorn Yorkie on an Indianapolis sidewalk earlier this week and took pity on the poor pup. She brought the matted, hungry and flea-bitten pooch to Post Road Vet Clinic, hoping someone would claim him.

One of the first things clinicians look for in a found animal is an identification microchip.

“Looking at him when he came in, we were like, ‘He is not going to be chipped,’ because he was covered in fleas, looked terrible, his teeth were terrible,” vet tech Diana Redmond told WTHR.
When the clinicians scanned for the chip, they were surprised to learn the pup was not only registered, but that he disappeared from Austin, Texas, six years ago. They called the phone number attached to the identification and the dog’s owners were ecstatic to learn their dog was found.

Soon, he will be reunited with his family.

“We actually have someone who is traveling to Austin Thursday night, so she will take him with her,” Danielle Beck of Indy Lost Pet Alert told WTHR.

The key to this homecoming was the microchip.

“It is rare for a dog to be missing for six years and be secured with a microchip,” Beck told the television station.

How does a dog survive 6 years on his own - and no one bothered with him along the way???

Yorkie as a Service Dog Therapy Dog

My little girl is now officially an Emotional Support / Service Dog.

She can now go EVERYWHERE with me.  For a small fee  I got her the paperwork.  ($70)  and  for about  $40  and  I got her a little  vest to wear.  That allows her to go into restaurants  with me and hotels.

For air travel,  most airlines require a note from your doctor as well, stating  your dog helps in relieving  anxiety, in my case. And most airlines  will waive  the normal  travel fee for a dog and most airlines allow me to have her on my lap, instead of under the seat, stressing both me and her out. Every airlines handles this a little different. So when booking your ticket, explain you have an emotional support dog.

For more information visit Service Dogs Certification.

Fun Facts about Yorkshire Terriers

Small. Fluffy. Adorable.Loveable. Precious. Your Best Friend!

American Kennel Club  has  five fun facts about this tiny breed with a big personality.
Here's what  say:

Fact 1: Loyalty is No. 1 With This Breed

German Shepherds are loyal, we know, and Labs and Golden Retrievers, sure but Yorkies? In fact, Yorkshire Terriers are known for their incredible loyalty to their owners, preferring to stay close by their owner's side at all times.

Fact 2: They Ran With the Rats!

Yorkshire Terriers were actually originally used for a not-so-glamorous purpose catching rats in clothing mills in the nineteenth century.

Fact 3: A Yorkie Was a War Hero

Smoky the Yorkshire Terrier was quite the hero during World War II. The little fluff ball helped save the lives of soldiers during the war by carrying communications wires through an underground tunnel.

Fact 4: They Didn't Become Yorkshire Terriers Until 1870

The Yorkie made its debut in England in 1861 as a "broken-haired Scotch Terrier." It wasn't until 1870, when a reporter stated, "they ought no longer to be called Scotch Terriers, but Yorkshire Terriers, for having been so improved here," that the name Yorkshire Terrier actually stuck.

Fact 5: Their Grouping Doesn't Become Their Personality

Don't be fooled because the Yorkie is part of the Toy Group this breed is by nature very brave, determined and energetic. They have big personalities and make great family pets.

Take Your Dog with you for Emotional Support

I always feel bad leaving my dog at home. IN the summer she is not allowed to go to the beach with us  Memorial day thru Labor Day. She can not go to most stores with us and most hotels don't want her. NOW, THAT IS CHANGING! I filed the paperwork and paid a small fee to have her deemed  an Emotional Support animal.

Under US law an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is a pet which provides therapeutic benefit to its owner through companionship and affection. Emotional Support Animals are not required to have any specialized training, they require only as much training as an ordinary pet requires in order to live peacefully among humans without being a nuisance or a danger to others.
There are two federal laws which grant special rights to owners of Emotional Support Animal:
  • The Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 (42 USC 3601, et seq.) allows you to live / stay anywhere you like without pet fees.  Any home, any lodging – even ones that specifically prohibit Dogs.
  • The Air Carrier Access Act allows you to travel on any airline without paying any pet fees and your Emotional Support Animal is allowed to accompany you into the cabin.

Don't Let Your Yorkshire Terrier Be Stolen

The American Kennel Club says the five AKC-recognized breeds most likely to be stolen are, in descending order: Yorkshire terrier, Chihuahua, French bulldog, Labrador retriever and Pomeranian.
To protect your pet:

• Don’t let your dog off-leash. Keeping it close reduces the likelihood that it will wander off and catch the attention of thieves.

• Don’t leave your dog unattended in your yard, especially if your fenced-in yard is visible from the street.

• If strangers approach you to admire your dog during walks, don’t answer questions about how much the dog cost or give details about where you live.

• Never leave your dog in an unattended car, even if it’s locked.

• Don’t tie your dog outside a store. Patronize only dog-friendly retailers, or leave the dog at home.

• Protect your dog with microchip identification and keep your contact information current with your microchip-recovery service provider.

• If your dog is stolen, file a police report and ask to have the microchip serial number and the dog’s description posted in the “stolen article” category on the National Crime Information Center.

• Keep current photos (profile and headshot) of your dog so you can distribute them immediately if your pet disappears.

• Buy from reputable dealers or rescue groups. If the dog is advertised as purebred, ask for the AKC litter registration number and call AKC customer service at 919-233-9767 to verify registration.

Missing Yorkie in Oregon

Father of 4 killed in 28-car pileup, family dog still missing.

 CLARK COUNTY, WA (KPTV) -

A local family is dealing with great loss after the big February snowstorm.
On Thursday, their father was killed in a massive pile up on I-5 created by slick road conditions.  Their family dog, Daisy, was also in the car, and she is still missing.

The father of four was killed in the 28-vehicle pileup on I-5 south of Ridgefield. Deputies say three other people were badly hurt.

According to Scott's family, he couldn't stop in time because of all of the snow piled on the freeway. His car was crushed in-between two truck trailers, and he died instantly. The family had no life insurance and he leaves behind 2 children with special needs,

If you know where Daisy might be, call the East Padden Animal Hospital.

If you want to help the Scott family during this difficult time, you can go to any US Bank and donate to the Matthew Scott Memorial Fund.

You can also donate online at fundrazer.com under Matthew Scott's name at 360-892-1500..

Life Magazine Yorkshire Terrier Portraits

In November 1964, LIFE magazine noted that “a small dog with a sweeping hairdo and a peppery disposition” was pushing the poodle aside as the elegant canine accessory-of-the-moment. LIFE also noted that the small, dynamic Yorkie — for it was none other than the Yorkshire Terrier to which the magazine devoted a multi-page feature — “is no lap dog. It has the dash and spirit of all terriers and is a better ratter than most cats.”
