"Desperate Housewives" Star Kyle MacLachlan and His Dogs, Mookie and Sam

Kyle MacLachlan may be famous for his roles in Twin Peaks, Sex and The City and Desperate Housewives, but on the web it's the actor's canine companions who lap up the limelight.

The thespian's two tail waggers-- a 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier and a 6-year-old exotic Yorkshire Terrier/Chihuahua (is that a Chorkie?)-- are the stars of The Adventures of Mookie and Sam, a website which offers a glimpse into the lives of the pair of "pup"arazzi magnets.

Lots of Kansas Dogs Needs Homes Now

A man sits on a bench in the shade next to a cage holding two gray feral kittens. A few feet away, another man holds onto a leash connected to a big brindle dog. Among the half-dozen animals awaiting their fate is an obviously pregnant Yorkshire terrier mix whose owner is relinquishing her to the shelter.

The animals are among 62 dogs and cats that will be admitted to the Humane Society on a day that also will see 18 pets adopted to new homes and 24 euthanized.

Admissions is the first stop for animals entering the shelter, which takes in more than 14,000 dogs, cats and other small pets a year. It's where the decision process begins on which animals will be offered for adoption and which won't.

Forty-three staff members carry out the Humane Society's mission: caring for animals and finding new homes for them. The shelter also relies on a pool of about 250 volunteers.

The Kansas City Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that receives no government or United Way funding and depends on adoption fees, private donations and fundraisers.

Leona Helmsley Leaves $12 million to Maltese

Famed hotelier Leona Helmsley,

who died Aug. 20, left her dog

Trouble $12 million in her will.

Two of her grandchildren got nothing.

Helmsley left her beloved white Maltese, named Trouble,

a $12 million trust fund, according to her will,

which was made public this week.

"I direct that when my dog, Trouble, dies,

her remains shall be buried next to my remains

in the Helmsley mausoleum," Helmsley wrote in her will.

Dog Days of Summer Safety

Each year, more than 10 million pets in America

become lost, and summer can be the most dangerous

time for pets. Whether escaping from yards, running away

after Independence Day fireworks or being displaced

due to seasonal natural disasters like hurricanes and

and ensure your pet has a cozy spot indoors where

they won't be tempted to run away.

Everyday Warm Weather Awareness:

No matter where they live, pet owners

should be aware that normal outdoor distractions,

such as birds and squirrels, increased outdoor

neighborhood activity and even seasonal

weather disturbances like thunderstorms

can cause pets to run away.

Pets should never be left alone outside,

even if they are in a fenced area.
