Yorkie Drowns at Doggy day Care in Florida

Such a sad story - from Cape Coral Florida.

A 3 pound Yorkie drowns in pool at  a doggy day care.

On Wednesday, owners took Callie to Pet Coral Resort and Veterinary located at 924 Del Prado South in Cape Coral.

It was supposed to be a routine temperment evaluation to see if Callie would be a good fit for boarding and day care. Somehow they let the dog into a pool, allegedly supervised, and the dog drowned and no one noticed.

Yorkie Scooting May Have Anal Gland Issues

I could not find a photo of a Yorkie scooting his butt on the floor - but I did want to mention this problem. A reader wrote in  and said her little Yorkie was scooting around her carpet, and she checked the anal area and it appeared to be clean - and wondered what was up?

ANAL GLANDS. It is not a pleasant topic but something pet owners (dogs and cats) must be aware of. If left untreated, it could cause huge problems and costly vet bills!

Anal glands are two, very small secretion glands that are located just to the outside  of a dogs (and cats)  anus. These glands were used to allow a Yorkie  ( Yorkshire Terrier ) or cat to mark its territory by secreting a thick, mucous substance that has a very strong and unpleasant odor. And this is also why many dogs like to sniff another dogs rear end.

Most Yorkies no longer  mark their territory this way, but the anal sacs or glands still remain. In normal conditions, and proper diet,  the glands empty when the Yorkie has a bowel movement with the contraction of the anus forcing the mucous material from the glands.

In some dogs and cats the anal glands can become stopped up and do not drain with a bowel movement or with natural friction, resulting in a painful condition known as an impaction.  When this happens an animal should see a vet ASAP.  If left untreated, you could have a huge on your hands and a costly vet bill. These impacted glands may cause the dog to stop and constantly lick at the area, or may, more commonly, cause the dog to "scoot" across the floor, grass or carpet.

Scooting is actually rubbing their bottom  in an attempt to empty the glands and reduce the pressure. If this works, what is left is a nasty, smelly, foul substance all over your rug or floor that is often mistaken for fecal material, when in fact it is mucous from the anal glands.

Often people believe that this scooting behavior is seen when the Yorkie has worms, and although that may be the case, it is more likely to be problems with blocked or impacted anal glands. And the dog should see a vet ASAP.

Some people will express their dogs anal glans themselves. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS, unless you have a very strong stomach and are prepared for a big mess. And you should have a vet or groomer show you how to do it the first time.

When you are expressing the anal glands, the contents can  squirt out unexpectedly and be messy. The odor can be quite foul, and expressing the anal glands may make you heave and it may make you feel a little ill if you have a weak stomach. A vet or groomer may charge $15-$25 to do the service.

Yorkie Waits Patiently For 2 Days

This is so crazy!

A 9-month-old Yorkshire terrier wasn't about to leave a Missouri rest stop without his master. Mistakenly left behind by an Arkansas truck driver, Rambo waited there for two days until his owner was able to track him down.

Rambo jumped out of Michael Siau's rig when Siau stopped at a rest area near Hannibal on Friday, the Hannibal Courier-Post (http://bit.ly/M4I2mh ) reported.

"Didn't even cross my mind that he might jump out. He never has before," Siau said. "I jumped back in the truck, put it in gear and drove off. And I just thought he was in the back asleep."

Siau made it all the way to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 170 miles to the north, before he realized Rambo was gone. But he knew if he turned around, his schedule would be thrown off and his job jeopardized.

Siau said he was "freaking out" as he tried to determine where Rambo was lost. He finally concluded the puppy must have gotten out in Missouri.

Siau began calling authorities. By Sunday morning, he had learned Hannibal had jurisdiction over the rest area. Hannibal animal control officer Tim Ledbetter was sent to the site.

Sure enough, little Rambo was there, sitting patiently.

Adopt a Yorkie...or Two!

Who says you can't find Yorkies in shelters?

Yogi and Boo Boo are available in Washington state.

Yogi and Boo Boo are two 9-year-old Yorkshire Terrier mixes that were found in a local shelter together. Now Redmond-based Motley Zoo Animal Rescue is working to find a loving home that will welcome them both together.

The two pooches, one male and one female, are both spayed/neutered, microchipped, flea-treated, dewormed and up-to-date on vaccines. Yogi and Boo Boo are calm among other dogs and would do fine in a household with children who are 8 years old or older.

My Dog...The King..or the Congressman?

My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day.
He has his food prepared for him.
His meals are provided at no cost to him.
He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year, if any medical needs arise. For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him. He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep.

If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up.
He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep.
He receives these accommodations absolutely free.
He is living like a king (queen), and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever. All of his costs are picked up by others who earn a living.
I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick ..........
My dog is a CONGRESSMAN !!!!

Yorkie Dreams

Today  my dads are out at the beach, and I am sad.

In Chicago, I can not go to beach Memorial Day thru Labor Day. I did get out there twice this Spring.  I love running on the sand and meeting all the people. Most of the people like me. But some people get mad when I fling sand on their blanket.

So I am home today, laying in the sun.  When they get home tonight I get to go out for nice walk!

Fiona - Another Great Rescue Story!

Another great video and story!  Somehow, we missed this last year. But thanks to Debbie,Lady Bug and Bebe - for sharing this story.

Fiona was blind in both eyes, living amongst a trash pile, when she was found. A vet had said he could restore sight in one eye. So  the video  went up, and went viral, with pleas for donations to cover her $3000 surgery.

Miraculously, within a week, enough people had donated money that Fiona was able to undergo the surgery. Two weeks later, Hagar uploaded a follow-up video, titled “Fiona Can See Now!” featuring the transformed pooch running around and wagging her tail to the strains of Jimmy Cliff singing “I Can See Clearly Now.”

Yorkie Terrier Rescue Saves Woman

This is amazing!

A rescue Terrier mix dog who saves a woman's life, by jumping on her chest!

One night, while waiting for the surgery, I had another spell but this time, when I came to, I found Ranger on my chest. All of a sudden I realized where the bruises had been coming from: Ranger was jumping up and down on me when my heart delayed restarting.

Ranger would repeat this act several times before I was finally able to clear my body of blood thinners and get my pacemaker. I had saved Ranger’s life, and he, in return, had saved mine — many times over.
Sometimes, when I try to be helpful, it seems my efforts are all in vain.

When that happens, I wonder why I even bother to try. Then, I remember Ranger and I know I have to keep trying because sometimes miracles can occur!

Smoky Yorkie Doodle Dandy

We have talked about SMOKY the famous war dog and his owner Bill Wynne before.  And if you still have not read book,  Yorkie Doodle Dandy: A Memoir get it!

Bill sent this clipping to me today.  Photographed when Smoky made an appearance in Chicago at the  Anti Cruelty Society in May of 1946.

The Cleveland Metroparks developed a spectacular setting for a memorial, dedicated to Smoky the war-dog hero, of World War II.

A circular, dark-pink patio is surrounded by lawn and greenery. Already, as a sentinel at attention, stands a gleaming, aluminum flagpole, posted in the former plain of trees and grass.
An expanded parking lot, paved and marked, provides easy access to visitors. Alongside the memorial site, is a multi-purpose trail, designed for walkers, cyclists and joggers.

The Smoky and Dogs of All Wars Memorial is located on Valley Parkway, in the Rocky Reservation of The Cleveland Metroparks, Lakewood, Ohio — 1.25 miles south of the Detroit Avenue Bridge entrance to The Metroparks.

Bill has two Yorkies these days and keeps up a blog, Yorkie Doodle Dandy!

Yorkie Doodle Dandy author Meets Lucy, a tiny, tiny Yorkie!

*Bill Wynne, 90, author of Yorkie Doodle Dandy: A Memoir , meets Lucy, a 4-year old Yorkshire Terrier owned by Sally Leone, right, at the Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation on Wednesday. Lucy, recognized as the world's smallest working dog, weighing 2.5 pounds, met Wynne, who was the owner of a dog named Smoky, another Yorkshire Terrier, recognized as the world's first therapy dog. They are filmed by a British ITV crew, for the show "Super Tiny Animals."

The legend and legacy of a small dog continue to grow, 55 years after her death.
Smoky, a Yorkshire terrier, became a 4-pound prodigy after an American GI found her in a New Guinea foxhole in 1944. She is recognized as one of the first therapy dogs in the world.
The Cleveland man who brought her home from the war got to meet a New Jersey yorkie on Wednesday who has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records in November as the smallest working dog in the world.

The man is William A. Wynne, a retired Plain Dealer photographer, who bought Smoky from another soldier for $6.44. The record setter is Lucy, who she weighs 2.5 pounds. She is also a therapy dog. Her owner, Sally Leone of Absecon, N.J. trained her after she intercepted Lucy on the way to a dog shelter.

Yorkie Mom Raises New Born Kittens

This is one of those amazing stories that warms your heart.
From Utah -  Bridget is a 10 -year-old Yorkshire terrier that was surrendered to the Humane Society of Utah last week. She was pregnant, and just days later gave birth to 2 pups, but they did not survive.

Later that day kittens arrived at the shelter.

The next morning when doctors came to check on both of their new patients, those patients had found each other. All five kittens, nestled under Bridget's caring fur and watchful eye ... she had become a mother after all.

"I haven't seen anything like that before, it was really just quite exciting, really quite touching," Van Zandt said.

And so, since Monday, this 10-year-old dog has been doing all of the usual 'new mom' activities for this litter of five kittens. She's been cleaning, chasing and even feeding her adoptive babies.

Does Your Dog Know When They Have Bad Haircuts?

Yesterday we took Trixie in to be trimmed up. With her usual groomer.  But she was only half listening to me when I told her how I wanted her trimmed up.

2 hours later I got my baby back with an AWFUL haircut - and even the dog knew it!  All day she moped around the house - and today she has not been usual self. It's like she has no confidence - her personality is deflated.

Do you thinks dogs know when they have a bad haircut?  or maybe it's just so short - she's feels different?

UK Yorkie from West Yorkshire Barks and Barks to Help Save Neighbor

From Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK -

A Yorkshire Terrier has been praised for raising the alarm after an elderly neighbour collapsed in her garden in the dark.

Brian Hullah, 62, said he had no idea how his five-year-old dog Bella knew Rita Butler had collapsed but he said if the dog had not alerted him she could have been there all night.

Mr Hullah said Bella, usually a quiet dog, started barking in the kitchen at about 9pm on Sunday.
He said: “She was going a bit berserk. She’s usually pretty quiet, so we thought there must have been a cat or something out there.

“I opened the door and she shot out and she was running up and down the side of the fence barking.”
Mr Hullah said his stepson Andrew White went through the gate into their neighbour’s garden and found the pensioner, believed to be about 80, laid on the ground under some bushes.

How could the dog possibly sense something was wrong with a neighbor?!
