Attach a leash to a body harness, not a collar.

The collar is only to hold dog tags, not drag the dog around.
This is a small, somewhat fragile dog.

Tugging and pulling on the collar around your

dog’s neck can contribute to a collapsed trachea and

other neck damage. Use a body harness.

They do require attention and playtime.

They don't like being left alone

VANESSA WILLIAMS REUNITED WITH HER YORKIE

Vanessa Williams was reunited with her stolen

Yorkshire terrier Enzo last Wednesday thanks to a locator

microchip that had been implanted inside of its body.

The actress appeared yesterday morning

on “Live with Regis and Kelly” and explained how Enzo,

thankfully, was already registered with pet

recovery service Home Again, which places a microchip

the size of a grain of rice into a furry loved one so that it can

be tracked down in case he or she is lost, or in Williams’ case, dognapped.

Williams said her pooch was tracked down to a man who

had stolen Enzo out of her yard in Chappaqua, NY on

Memorial Day, and was found with the dog

across state lines in Connecticut.
The former Miss America had raised concerns with

police that a dognapping ring could be operating around

her Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Police, however, were

ready to blame the missing dog on hungry coyotes in the wooded area.

Yorkie Scams

It has been a record year for Yorkie

stealings and Yorkie scams.

Puppy scams are popping up in both online and print classified ads.

The seller appears to be local and offers free English bulldogs or

Yorkshire terriers. But when contacted by e-mail, the seller says

he or she is in Africa on a religious mission and promises to ship

the dog overnight for a few hundred dollars. After getting the money,

the seller never ships a puppy.

It's difficult for people to recover money in an international

Internet scam because what's considered fraud in the United

States may be legal in another country, said Ken Huffer,

special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service's

Phoenix, Ariz., field office.

"Unless they step on U.S. soil, it's difficult to make an arrest," he said.

"It's like the Nigerian advance fee scams we've been

seeing for years, except with the face of a puppy,"

said Steve Cox, a Better Business Bureau council vice president.
No matter how much was paid, no puppies arrived.

Potty Training A Yorkshire Terrier

HELP!

Potty training can be a nightmare for

some dog owners. We got this

question sent in today....

"I have 12wk yorkie. I would like to know what

is the best way to potty train.

I live in an apartment that has carpet all over

except for the kitchen at the bathroom.

I tried taking him outside but he doesn't go potty.

He does it when he comes back inside.

I found out from the breeder that my boyfriend

got him from that the dog is not use to grass only

the potty pads. I have him in a baby play pen where

is bed is at one end and the potty pad is at the other.

I just recently bought a crate for him but he went a peed

in the crate. In desperate need

of help on what to do. Thanks!"

Being used to potty pads may be why he is

not going outside. - Although I was trained

on paper when I was very small and introduced to

grass I think, around 8-9 weeks.

Maybe try putting the potty pad outside will get

him to do his business outside....maybe even

spinkle some grass blades on the pad...

Vanessa Williams Yorkie Missing

NEW YORK

The pet Yorkie belonging to actress-singer

Vanessa Williams is missing. The dog,

called Enzo, disappeared from her Chappaqua yard

Monday, becoming the second pooch of a

high-profile owner to go missing from northern

Westchester since Mother's Day.

While Williams raised concerns that there's some sort

of dognapping ring, Mount Pleasant Police

Chief Louis Alagno suggested another theory,

that coyotes are snatching the bite-size pets.
Alagno says coyotes are common and they prey on small pets.

Williams filed a missing-dog report with Mount Pleasant

police Monday after she came home from an errand

to find her black and tan Yorkshire terrier missing

from her fenced-in yard.
Another dog, a blond dachshund in Yorktown that ran away

on Mother's Day, has also failed to turn up, despite the work

of a pet detective and a publicist.

There is a $2500 reward.

Yorkshire Terrier Temperment

I think,though a toy breed, the Yorkie still

retains much of its terrier ancestry in terms of personality.

Individual dogs sometimes differ, but they are

generally intelligent, independent and gutsy.

Yorkshire Terriers are quick to determine where

they fit in a household's "pack."Their behavior towards

outsiders will vary - they often will be inclined to bark

at strangers, but some Yorkies are outgoing and friendly

towards new people while others are withdrawn and aloof.

The differences in behavior in this regard are largely

based on how the owner trains or conditions (and socializes)

the Yorkie.A few individual Yorkshire Terriers

may be timid or nervous, rather than bold, but the

vast majority do seem to meet the breed standard for

a confident, vigorous and self-important personality.

Knitters, Crocheters Craft Sweaters To Benefit Yorkies In Need!

Harrisonberg, VA.

According to Knit Works owner Cris Reid,

the store will give free knitting and crochet patterns

for small-to-medium-size dog sweaters to anyone who

wants to participate in the project, and will take the finished

projects through the end of July. The store has collected about

20 sweaters so far, Reid said, with other customers saying

they are ready to add their creations to the total.

Store employees and the knitters and crocheters

who shop there say they are happy to see Knit Works

go to the dogs while they benefit the mission of the

United Yorkie Rescue Organization.

Knit Works will give out free patterns and take

in dog sweaters through the end of July.

Rosie's a great listener.
She doesn't judge, criticize or make
fun of anyone's mistakes.
Rosie is a 2-year-old Yorkshire terrier and a registered
therapy dog. A member of the Paws for READ
(Reading Education Assistance Dogs) program,
Rosie helps kindergarten through third-grade
students at improve their literary skills.

"The idea is to help children to want to read.
Rosie makes it a pleasant experience,” said Carol McAulty,
a dog trainer and handler for 20 years.
In Dodie Bedell's third-grade classroom, students
find a favored spot on the floor and sit in groups of two
and three. They take turns reading out loud to each
other. Several volunteers help out, but Rosie is their favorite.

"Rosie helps to calm and relax the students, especially
the ones with the fear of reading out loud,” Bedell said.
Rosie curled up on the lap of a girl with long
blonde hair and listened as she read.

With Rosie present, the shy readers begin to open up.
One of the students started by whispering the words of his
story. By the end of the session, he spoke normally.
Researchers have found children with low self-esteem are more
willing to read and interact with therapy animals than
with another person. Those children who've participated in
the program have stronger literacy skills and more confidence.


In addition, therapy dogs are required to complete a minimum
of 10 hours of supervised visits in two different therapy dog settings.
Rosie and McAulty keep a busy community schedule.
Together they make stops at a local hospital, a seniors housing
complex and the library.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO TAMMY FAYE?

In a note posted to her Web site,

Tammy Faye Messner said doctors have stopped

her cancer treatment and she only weighs 65 pounds.
Messner, who lives in Matthews, was diagnosed

with colon cancer in 1996. Three years ago, in 2004,

she said she had lung cancer. In a December appearance on

"Larry King Live," Messner said the cancer had spread

from her colon to other parts of her body.

"The doctors have stopped trying to treat the cancer and so

now it's up to God and my faith," according

to the note, dated Tuesday, on www.tammyfaye.com.

"And that's enough! But please continue to pray for the

pain and sick stomach."
In the letter, Messner also thanks her friends and fans for

the "tables full of cards, and beautiful little gifts laying everywhere"

and says that many have been helping to write thank you

notes as she has "been on so much medication."

"To those of you who are suffering as I.....

HAWKS AND SMALL DOGS

Can a hawk swoop down and take a small dog?

Maybe, according to Herb Roberts, an animal curator

at the Memphis Zoo.

Hawks are usually looking for rodents like mice

and rats and even rabbits.


Dogs are larger than most rodents so it may be hard

to fly off with them. -- But it has happened.

Also dogs don't act like most prey.

They will bark, bite and fight.

But that doesn't mean a hawk or other birds of prey

can't kill a small dog or a cat.
The birds can swoop in with a powerful death blow using

their talons to kill the animal. They will eat their prey

where they kill it.

Small dogs and cats are also vulnerable to raccoons,

coyotes and foxes, Roberts said.
Tiny dogs should probably always have some adult supervision

while outside or at least be outside with children or other humans.

I have only flown myself twice! And I liked it,

but at the high altitudes, it was a little

difficult to breath. But I do enjoy traveling!

Choose a nonstop, direct flight.
Exercise your pet before leaving to help it relax and sleep.

Do not feed or give water to your pet two hours before departure.
Check in at least two hours before time and have all paperwork ready.

Tape a note on the pet container with all relevant information:

name of the pet, age, destination and flight number.
Make sure the carry-on container will fit under the seat.

Familiarize your pet with its carrier before leaving home,

and make sure the pet is wearing tags or is micro chipped.

When 3-year-old Abigail Arnwine went missing late

Monday night, more than 60 people, several tracking dogs

and even a helicopter searched for her as temperatures

dipped into the 30s.
But after seven hours, it was Murphy,

the family's Yorkshire terrier, who helped lead them to the toddler.

Abigail was cold, but safe, about a half mile from her house.

The little girl has a history of

wandering off!
Maybe they should keep the child

on a short leash....

Delta Airlines Loses Yorkshire Terrier

Airline Loses Chesapeake Woman's Yorkie

A Chesapeake woman was thrilled to get a new pet,

but when the puppy wouldn't eat, the breeder suggested

for a short time, she send it back to it's mother.

She put it on a flight for Texas. And now the puppy is missing.

Airlines frequently misplace luggage,

but it usually turns up.

How do you lose a dog?!

"I've already communicated with the kennel.

I've already communicated with the airlines in Atlanta,

in Norfolk, in Texas. No one knows where she is.

She's completely vanished," said Courtney Johnson.

Johnson is terrified of what may have happened

to the 3 month old Yorkshire Terrier she named Apple.

She bought the puppy from a breeder known

as Kimberli's Kuties, who came highly recommended

by several friends. But for two weeks, the playful puppy

wouldn't eating properly. Johnson feared Apple needed

to be with her mother a little longer and the breeder agreed.

So on Saturday afternoon she sent the puppy back

to Texas through Delta Cargo."I received a phone call

at midnight letting me know she had missed her flight,

but that she'd be on a flight first thing in the morning.

First thing in the morning, I get a call from the breeder

saying she didn't make the flight and they did not

know where Apple was," she said.Since then Johnson

has spent a lot of time on the phone trying to locate Apple,

but to no avail.

"I have been hung up on.

I have been told it's not a child, it just a dog.

My biggest fear is that they've pushed her somewhere.

They've just looked right beyond her and she's now gone

three days and she's not eaten or drunken anything,"

she said.Johnson says she almost prays that someone

stole Apple. At least that way she'd know her puppy was

being cared for. But at this point, she can't even get that

confirmed. "I've been waiting all my life for this puppy.

I've saved my money and I've saved my money and finally,

when I was able to afford her and be able to take care of her,

she's gone and no one has any answers for me," she said.

Your NewsChannel Three spoke with Delta Airlines

spokesperson, Gina Laughlin. She told us Delta airlines

deeply regrets what happened and hopes to return the

puppy very soon. Laughlin also told us they launched

an investigation into what happened.

However, Johnson tells me, Delta has not even called.

Little Lady disappeared in Arkansas

and ended up in Florida,

The dog allegedly jumped into the wrong car...

the dog had no coller or tags and the driver

of the car said they thought she was a lost dog

and needed a home.

It was all smiles as Patsy Perryman reunited with

her 12-year-old Yorkshire terrier at the

Tampa Police Department’s division one station

Thursday. She hadn’t seen her beloved companion,

named Lady, in nearly 2 months.

Toronto Unmasks Puppy Scam

TORONTO, April 2 /CNW/ -

The Toronto Humane Society is warning the

public that an advertisement which appeared in a

local free daily newspaper offering
a female Yorkshire Terrier for sale appears to be a scam.

The ad, with theheadline "Female Yorkie Terrier Puppy"

and the sub-headline "Sami is so sweet
and lovable" appeared in the Monday, April 2 edition

of 24 Hours, and may have also appeared elsewhere.

The only contact info offered was an

e-mail address (mailto:sandra_pets01@yahoo.com.

"I saw the ad," says THS senior communicator

Lee Oliver, "and thought it
was odd that there was no phone number or address,

so I sent an e-mail asking
for particulars. I was sort of expecting to find a puppy

mill, but instead I came across a pretty

obvious scam."

The response, in broken English, indicated

that for $500 the dog's owner
would ship the "AKC-registered" 10-week-old

"housebroken and potty trained"
pup from her new home in Nigeria,

where the seller was recently transferred by the

United Nations to work as the head of public relations,

to anywhere in the world.

The $500 price tag included all shipping,

handling and insurance.

In the reply the dog's name inexplicably changed

from Sami (in the ad) to Suzzy(in the e-mail).

Versions of the ad have shown up in the Prince George,

B.C., on at least one online classifieds website and in the

Cayman Islands. In the Caymans, police have gone so far

as to issue warnings to citizens not to fall for the overseas fraud.

"I imagine most people are smart enough to see

right through this," notes
Oliver. "But just in case you're tempted by such

an ad, just remember that
whenever you come across a deal that's too good

to be true, odds are it's,
well, too good to be true."

I get the nicest mail!

I got this letter today...

"Hi Coco and Coco's daddy,
I have just been enjoying your Blog

and thought I'd write a note to say how wonderful

it is with all of the pictures and stories, etc. Such a nice thing to do.

We have two Yorkies named TeddyBear (boy who is 4 1/2 yrs.)

and BabyDoll (girl who is 4 yrs.). They are half-brother and sister

and they are wonderful little treasures. Such personalities and

incredibly loving. I feel sorry for people who haven't

experienced the unconditional love of a dog ...

especially a toy breed.

Our human child is grown and has left the nest,

so these two Yorkies are most definitely our babies and

we are not embarassed to say so. Dogs are little angels

sent from heaven to enrich our lives and to help us experience

what true devotion is. They are a tremendous blessing.

Thanks so much for sharing with the rest of us Yorkie lovers.

I am most fortunate to have purchased Coco's book from

eBay a couple of years ago and when I wrote to tell

her daddy how much I loved the book ... he generously
