Teeth Cleaning and Yorkies

Trixie turned 6 this year - and I have to admit - we have not done a great job brushing her teeth. Like many dogs, they just don't like it. So we tried things like  Plaque sprays and special toothpastes - but it was time finally for a cleaning. And I am always afraid to have a tiny dog put under.

But she survived and bounced back!  And we are determined to NOT let her teeth get dirty from here on out.   Our vet highly recommended this line called  Clenz-a-dent. Clenz-A-Dent PlaqueOff contains the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum which is a natural agent that reduces the formation of dental plaque, tartar [calculus] and bad breath. You can add it to their food - or their water - so we're trying that for now - I will let you know how it works.

(You can get it discounted at Amazon - cheaper than the vet!~)

  1. Lady Bug has had her teeth cleaned once and it's not a decision to take lightly when it comes to having your dog go under anesthesia. My baby girls heart had stopped while her teeth were being cleaned but the quick actions of my vets staff quickly revived her. She will be 10 in December and is due for another cleaning in the near future. Little dogs have just as many teeth jammed into their mouth as big dogs do and that is why little dogs have more dental problems. I am still going to get Bugs teeth cleaned during dental health month. All of the health problems that can occur because of bad dental health out weighs the cleaning. Good dental health is such a big part of their over all good health. We all need to pay more attention to our kids mouth. Thanks for the tip on the Clenz-a-dent. I may give it a try also. One last thing. Check with your vet if they have a dental health month. My vet gives a discount during that month on dental cleaning. Debbie, Lady Bug and Bebe

  2. I put Lucy in her carrier to brush her teeth. I clip her collar to the small clip inside the carrier. Then she can't leave me, she has to cooperate. It's the only way I can get into her mouth. Lucy is due for a cleaning in a couple of weeks, I'm so glad because I changed toothpastes and she has gotten a lot of tarter since I switched to Nylabone. She did really well with enzymatic petrodex but the stores don't carry it anymore because its expensive. It's around ten bucks a tube but it works so now I will order online and continue to use it.

  3. I randomly stumbled on your blog while googling for stuff at work. I have two little dogs, a Matlese and a Morkie, who are both due for a teeth cleaning. Our friends and family think I'm CRAZY when I bring up that we are saving up money to get this done. It's nice to see their are other people out there that have dealt with this to lol. I am also very interested in how the products you mentioned work for you!

  5. I am now brushing 2 times a day. Lucy will be 14 in February. I have always brushed her teeth and had them cleaned at the clinic once a year.. I would say...give it a go and see what you notice over time because yorkies have a difficult time with clean teeth because their mouths are so small.
