911 Dog Hero? The James Crane Story

ALLEGEDLY - James Crane worked on the 101st floor of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center .. He is blind so he has a golden retriever named Daisy.

After the plane hit 20 stories below, James knew that he was doomed, so he let Daisy go, out of an act of love. She darted away into the darkened hallway.

Choking on the fumes of the jet fuel and the smoke James was just waiting to die. About 30 minutes later, Daisy comes back along with James' boss,
Who Daisy just happened to pick up on floor 112. (?) I thought there were only 110 floors....



On her first run of the building, she leads James, James' boss, and about 300 more people out of the doomed building.

But she wasn't through yet, she knew there were others who were trapped. So, highly against James' wishes she ran back in the building. On her second run, she saved 392 lives. Again she went back in. During this run, the building collapses. James hears about this and falls on his knees into tears.

Against all known odds, Daisy makes it out alive, but this time she is carried by a firefighter. "She led us right to the people, before she got injured" the fireman explained. Her final run saved another 273 lives. She suffered acute smoke inhalation, severe burns on all four paws, and a broken leg, but she saved 967 lives. Daisy is the first civilian Canine to win the Medal of Honor of New York City.

It's a tear jerker - but is it true?

This email circulated right after the tragic 911 day. And it has resurfaced. Try as I might, I have not been able to locate a single published news story mentioning a World Trade Center survivor named James Crane. And though there were indeed many canine heroes who participated in rescue operations at Ground Zero after the September 11 terrorist attack, I could find no golden retriever named Daisy listed among them.

ALL THAT SAID, there were at least four real-life examples of guide dogs escorting their blind owners out of the burning twin towers to safety. Roselle, a Labrador retriever, led Michael Hingson down from the 78th floor of the north tower and to the home of a friend several blocks away. Dorado, also a Labrador, guided Omar Rivera down 70 flights of stairs, an ordeal that lasted over an hour but ended with both man and dog a safe distance from the towers when they collapsed. - also - "Salty" another guide dog, was also awarded the medal for guiding his owner from the WTC. New York Police dog, "Appollo" was another to receive the medal on behalf of Ground Zero Search and Rescue dogs. Although these animal heroes helped to save lives on 9/11, none of them repeatedly returned alone to the building to lead hundreds of people to safety.

UK Site May Help Find Missing Dogs

DOG loving Jill Neary has devoted herself to reuniting pooch owners with their lost pets... after turning internet sleuth to track down her own beloved Yorkshire Terrier.

Jill was heartbroken when her dog Indy went missing. And, after a five-week hunt that involved tip-offs and sightings posted on a Facebook page she set up, she was reunited with him.

Now she hopes her story will inspire others never to give up, and also that the website she set up on Facebook will leave a lasting legacy helping to reunite other owners with their dogs.

For my birthday, I was presented with this very cool, rainbow colored plush birthday cake!
Next, my dad's put this awesome big brownie cake in front of me! My mouth was watering over this!! After they sang Happy Birthday to me, I was allowed to dive in!

At first I had a hard time getting a slice out - but boy when I did, I RAN WITH IT!!

The next day, I was exhausted from all the excitement. What a great birthday!

The Yorkie and The Pig at Chicago's Hollywood Beach

Technically, animals are not allowed at the Chicago's Hollywood Beach. But it is really only enforced Memorial Day thru Labor Day.

A few days ago it was 85! So we headed to the beach with Trixie and she loves to walk along the sandy shores and get her feet wet, and drink from the crystal clear water!

This week she got to meet her first pig!

I don't think either of them knew what to do!

We joke, that after a long walk or an exhaustive play time, our little Yorkie Trixie Lee just plops on her side, exhausted - and we joke, that her little battery must have worn out. So other day she was laying there, with her eyes open, but not moving - so I put a couple batteries next to her, to shoot this picture. I thought it was kind of funny!

CATS and dogs are digging digital TV.

Pets can now pick out images on digital that they could not follow on the old analog boxes.

Melbourne animal eye specialist Andrew Turner said his cat Milo always tuned in to the TV when he watched golf on a pay TV sports channel.

"He sits there watching the ball fly through the air and when it lands on the green, that's his cue to whack it," he said.

One of two specialists at All Animal Eye Services in Mt Waverley, Dr Turner said that far from being colour blind, dogs saw blues and yellows.

And while analog images were shown at speeds too slow for dogs to identify, digital let them pick out the pictures.

"There is no harm in allowing an animal to watch TV, so long as their viewing habits are matched with an adequate exercise program," Dr Turner said.

5 Best Hygiene tips for Yorkies and other Small Breed Dogs

As all dog owners know, every breed is different. They all have their own little individual quirks and behaviors, needs and issues. When it comes to the hygiene of a Yorkie or other small breed dogs, there are a few things you have to look out for to keep your little one safe and happy and most of all, healthy.

1. Grooming. Vet checks are a given. Every dog needs a check up, regular shots, but a trip to the groomers can be just as important. Because they have hair rather than fur and don’t shed, it keeps on growing just like ours does. Consequently, they need regular brushing and hair cuts so they don’t become a tangled mess. Not only will it look bad, but it’s also very itchy and uncomfortable for your dog. Tangles and mats don’t dry well when wet and can hold moisture close to your dog’s skin for long periods of time and can actually promote wounds in those areas.


2. Eyes. Many small breed dogs have issues with “weeping eyes” and you can see it clearly on light colored animals that often have a dark stripe leading from their eye to their muzzle. This is perfectly normal and helps to keep their eyes flushed and clean, but does require a little bit of regular maintenance. Picking off the dry pieces and not letting it build up is important. A gentle cleaning with a warm wet cloth can keep the area free of hard and itchy build up.

3. Ears. Any dog, small breed or otherwise, should have their ears checked and cleaned on a regular basis but for breeds with continually growing hair rather than fur it’s even more important. The hair in the ears needs to be clipped or plucked on a regular basis to avoid infection. It’s also much easier to clean out dirt and debris if you can actually see inside the ear. Clean with a moist cotton swab along all of the visible areas. NEVER put a q-tip inside your dogs ear canal past the point that you can see it. This should be left to a vet as you can do serious damage.


4. Teeth. Small breed dogs seem to have far more problems with their teeth than larger breeds do and good teeth are essential to your dog being able to eat properly (and avoid painful rotten or abscessed teeth and gums.) Brushing their teeth regularly is the obvious solution but some animals are simply not interested in letting that happen! Taking a “finger brush” available at any pet store and rubbing a small amount of dog toothpaste over their gums and teeth can also help, as will crunchy dog bones. Your annual vet check should also always include an oral exam.


5. Body temperature. Again, because of the difference between a non-shedding dog versus a shedding one, it’s important to understand that your dog can overheat or get dangerously cold very quickly. As they can’t grow a dense winter coat, Yorkies often need some type of sweater in the colder months, even for short trips to pet waste stations. Always grab a warm garment along with your dog waste bags for trips outdoors. Once indoors, the garment should be removed to allow the skin to dry. In the summer months, keep them well hydrated and well groomed to avoid overheating.



Everyone wants their furry friend to be safe and healthy and as long as you know the specific things to watch with whatever breed your dog may be, there’s no reason that they can’t live a long and happy life by your side.

Yorkie Custom Designer Hand Made Clothes

Trixe got some new clothes this week. Though she was NOT in a modeling mood today! This very sweet lady met Trixie a couple months ago. And she said she would LOVE to knit her a couple outfits. So she made these GORGEOUS outfits.

The first one on top, is this delicate, woven, stretchy unique material. The one below, was made from a very beautiful yarn from Wales and she accented it with wonderful glass beads! Both are just wonderful, and I told her, she should start taking custom orders! Deaf Dachshund Learns Sign Language

Even though this is a site for Yorkies! I DO associate with other breeds of dogs!

This story is so sweet - A deaf dachshund is getting some expert help learning more sign language after finding a new home at the Missouri School for the Deaf.

A dog named Sparky was born deaf. The breeder said he barked CONSTANTLY and no one wanted him. She was about to put him down. (HOW CRUEL IS THAT?!)

Someone saw an opportunity and got the dog into eight weeks of training with inmates at the South Central Correctional Center. They taught the dog sign language and controlled his barking. They decided that Sparky should live with deaf students.

The superintendent of the Fulton school, Barbara Garrison, jumped at the chance. The students continue adding to the sign language Sparky learned from the inmates. He already knows the signs for "no," "sit," "lay down," "stay," "stop" and "heel."

The brindle-colored dachshund even sleeps with students in the dorms sometimes.

Sophomore Catherine Slinkard of Sullivan asked to keep Sparky overnight first, so he stayed in her dorm one night.

"He was very calm when I had him," Slinkard said through an interpreter.

Then Sparky went over to Michael Miller's dorm. The senior says he fell in love with the little dog. Miller learned quickly that yelling at Sparky did no good. He had to either use sign language or pick the dog up to get his attention. Miller knew Sparky could hear nothing, just like him.

"I feel that because I can communicate with him in signs that it's special," he said through an interpreter.

When Sparky isn't overnighting in the dorms, he sleeps at Garrison's house where she keeps four other dachshunds.

He patters around campus during the day.

"He fits perfectly here," Garrison said, "because these kids hear all the time what they can't do. We try to tell them what they can do."

Prison staff checks in frequently to see how Sparky is doing. The news is all good. Garrison said Sparky teaches responsibility and has the ability to help calm down students with behavior or social problems.

"He likes his new deaf family here," she said.

Famous Fido Dog Rescue Chicago

It's so hard right now-

So much going on in this crazy world, and so many who need help.

Humans and animals. Where do you give? I don't know the answer -I wish I was Oprah and had gobs of money to give all of those in need.

In Chicago, Famous Fido Rescue & Adoption Alliance was founded by Gloria Lissner, owner/operator of Happy Tail’s/Famous Fido’s. In addition to grooming and boarding, Gloria has been a devoted dog rescuer for 40 years. In fact, with 19,000+ animals being put to death annually, Gloria specifically formed FFRAA to collaborate with others to end Chicago animal homelessness and death. Chicago needs to become a NO KILL CITY.

Of course, money is needed to help care for, clean, feed , rehabilitate and find homes. So Gloria, who is also a dog treat manufacturer, is soon launching a cookie campaign. But in the meantime, still funds are needed to help her with her workload.

She really is doing an amazing job in Chicago. If you have a couple extra dollars this month, perhaps consider her campaign.

Accommodating dogs is the focus of The Privileged Pooch, but Espinosa features hotels, boutiques, and eateries that would appeal to dog owners whether or not they were traveling with their pets. Best Shampoo for Yorkshire Terriers

We used this shampoo last fall and really loved it! Then my bottle got misplaced and we tried a couple other brands that were just OK. I found my bottle of Yorkie Splash today and was so excited, gave Trixie a bath this afternoon.

Audrey Hepburn and her Yorkshire Terrier Mr. Famous

Mr. Famous was Audrey Hepburn's first beloved Yorkshire Terrier, and actually appeared with her in a scene in Funny Face. DID YOU KNOW? It was Audrey Hepburn, who actually introduced Yorkshire Terriers to the world of celebrities, this big fashion to have a lap-dog started in Hollywood exactly from Audrey and her little friend Mr. Famous.

For Audrey, Mr. Famous was the object of her love, who shared with her the place on the magazine's covers. The tiny dog became an integral Audrey's companion, and the great actress was giving him all her love and devotion.
