Big Yorkshire Terrier Gets Life Saved from Death Row

OHIO Sixth grader Marquis Reddick receives a kiss from Dru, a 5-year-old Yorkshire terrier belonging to Longfellow Middle School assistant principal Teresa Florez, who's holding dog, on Friday in Lorain, Ohio. Six-graders at the school participated in the Pennies for Pets project, where students donate pennies to gather the $30 required to save a pet from being euthanized.

In the last year, students have saved five dogs, who then were adopted. Just by saving pennies!"What it does is give us hope for the future by learning how to respect animals. There's a whole new generation of young people dedicated to giving up lunch and snack money to help. It's amazing," Wilbur (a teacher ) said.

Wilbur said donations to Pennies for Pets can be made payable to Partners with Paws and sent to P.O. Box 277, Oberlin, OH 44074.

Yorkie Life -Spring Time in Chicago

My dad calls me the SUNSHINE PRINCESS!
I love to lay in the sun, as it streams thru the windows.
And this last week, it has been 65 degrees here in Chicago,
so my dad opened the window for me to look out and smell all
of the scents of Spring in the air!
My dad thinks I enjoy looking out the window -
which really is not true. It the SMELLING.
Dogs smell the air to get a sense of what is going
on all around them!

Little Yorkie Saved With Oxygen at Fire Scene

FIREFIGHTERS saved a dog's life when they tackled a blaze in Greenock, Scotland

They gave oxygen to Eric, a one-year-old Toy Yorkshire terrier named after former Manchester United legend Eric Cantona.

A kitchen fire had broken out in a semi-detached house in Old Inverkip Road and wee Eric was home alone next door.

Teacher Elizabeth Dyer said: "I'm so grateful to them for their help. He's been to the vet for a check-up and he's fine now - full of life as usual."

Cat and Dog Washing Machines

Giving your sweet little Yorkie a weekly bath isn't that bad
of a job. But dog owners that own bigger dogs have
a much harder time. And a groomer will charge at least $25
to bath your pet. And cats, FORGET IT!~Most cats hate water!
A couple years ago the first Pet Washing Machine was launched.
And now, they are really catching on all over Europe and Japan,
and even a couple here in the US.
For about $5-7, the machine wets the pet, sprinkles shampoo,
wets and rinses, and then blow dry's the pet.

The device looks something like an over-sized microwave, with a large opening through which you insert your pet. Once the door is shut (and presumably locked) you pay your money, punch in a few options (anti-flea spray? deodorant? under-body anti-rust coating?), and then stand back and watch as your pet throws a fit of epic proportions while jets of high-pressure suds whisk away all that nastiness, before driers blow them clean.
Some machines have holes so owners can put their
hands in and scrub the pet and the pet feels more connected.

Naka Honda said that his Yorkshire Terrier, Benji,
"hated" the dryer, but so long as the owner stood
outside the glass the dog was ok. Honda added that
he did not think it was cruel, though he admitted Benji
took a bit of getting used to the clean.
The 30-minute process is entirely safe.
I don't think cats will ever like getting wet!

Yorkie Health Issues and Life Span

A friend of mine who has a 14 year old yorkie, recently spent about $2800 to have cataracts surgery done on the dogs eyes. The surgeries were done 1 year apart - and really have not helped much at all he said.

Yorkies are generally tough little dogs, but the breed does sometimes experience certain health disorders. Congenital liver shunts, hypothyroidism, eye irratations and renal displaysia are the main problems facing the breed today.

My little Trixie has patella luxation, and some yorkies get premature dental disease and some puppies are born with open fontanels.

Be very careful when buying small dogs. Make sure you know where, how and who bred the dog.

Generally speaking, yourkies will live 12-17 years, with 15 being about average.

Tango - Tale of an Island Dog - Yorkshire Terrier

Meant for kids, but I liked it!

Tango, a Yorkshire terrier owned by a wealthy model, is swept overboard in a storm and miraculously washes up on Prince Edward Island, barely alive. But his silver ID collar has fallen off. Desperate to return home, Tango meets a foster child who has no home and a lonely widow who does have a home but no one with whom to share it. Then a loyal, elderly fox and a band of vicious feral cats join the mix. Filled with thoughtful observances and lyric descriptions of the island, the writing is a treat. The sympathetic story has soul and substance.

You don't need to be a dog fan to love Tango.

Orlando Bloom - Babysitting the Yorkie Again!

Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom was spotted this weekend taking care of his girlfriend's pet dog, Frankie, once again. Seems like he is ALWAYS looking after that adorable little Yorkie!

According to Peoplepets.com, the actor carried the Yorkshire terrier through the Los Angeles set of The Good Doctor.

Frankie is said to belong to model Miranda Kerr, currently working in Australia.

Bloom apparently had to film a scene where he dives into the cold ocean fully clothed. - But kept the dog nearby.

"He's kind of aloof with people, but he's a good dog," Bloom said.

Yorkshire Terrier Is Number One in New York City

AKC announced that the YORKSHIRE TERRIER
Dropped to number 3 this year in the US.
However, it is the number one dog, for the second year
in a row, in NEW YORK CITY!

"New York City loves their small dogs," said Lisa Peterson, spokeswoman for the American Kennel Club, which released the list of the most popular pure breeds. "It just reinforces the fact that New Yorkers live a busy, fast-paced lifestyle and need their portable pooches."

FYI- I would guess the Yorkie is Number one is Europe also.
Last year in Prague and Paris, I saw Yorkies EVERYWHERE~!

Healthy All Natural Dog Treats from VitaLife

As an online publisher, people frequently ask me and my dad's to evaluate products. Imagine my surprise today when a BIG BOX from Dog Time Media and VitaLife arrived with MY NAME ON IT! Miss Trixie Lee Deluxe! I could smell something good inside!

My dad opened it up and it was 3 BIG BAGS of treats! Oh boy, was I in heaven. The first bag was Duck and Sweet Potato Twists. My dad was happy because the label said "no preservatives and no byproducts or fillers." It's a real piece of dried sweet potato wrapped with a real piece of duck jerkey! They are like gourmet doggie appetizers.

The next one I sampled was the Healthy Hips and Joints Chicken Tenders - with Glucosamine and Chondroitin which helps to rebuild and maintain cartilage in dogs. (They also make one for Healthy Skin and Coat..a formula that contains Vitamin A and E to benefit your dog's healthy skin and coat.) We have had something similar from other companies, but I have to say, these were nice thick strips and I really enjoyed them.

The bag says, "Guaranteed to have your furry friend begging for more, VitaLife Chicken Tenders are the perfect way to treat your dog, naturally! " - and they are right. I beg for these all the time. My dad actually likes to cut them into small pieces and gives them to me as treats when I do tricks.

This last one was MY FAVORITE! Pieces of banana wrapped with a piece of dried chicken. YUM! My dad likes to give them to me because they are all natural. He said,"there is no salt, nothing artificial, no glycerin added and no sorbitol..." I don't know what any of that even is - I just know it tastes good!

I highly recommend these treats! I rate them 5 BIG BONES!

No White Christmas for this Yorkshire Terrier

Theo, a 13 year-old Yorkshire terrier, walks along Ferry St. with Marguerite Moncrieff-Buck in downtown Windsor, Ontario. Theo, a therapy dog, has been helping patients in the palliative care at the Windsor Regional Hospital western campus for over five years.

No snow in Windsor this week - just lots of rain!
So much for a white Christmas!
But hey, at least he won't need booties!

Schmitty in New York City This Weekend - Yorkshire Terriers Tweeting with Chairty

Harried New Yorkers hurrying down W 57th St last Friday were stopped dead in their tracks by the sight of two Yorkshire terriers high fiving each other in the window of a landmark store.

Even more unbelievable - the two cute Yorkies were taking pet trick requests from followers on Twitter who were watching online from all over – even Egypt and Japan.

This Friday and Saturday, Dec, 11th and 12th, Schmitty and Pudge will once again be taking pet trick requests on Twitter in the store window of Lee’s Art Shop in Manhattan to benefit pets in need. Some of the popular requests also include their show stopping “Ring the Bell” trick, hide & seek, play dead, roll over, and speak. Passers-by and online followers alike even enjoy watching them sleep - which they do a lot. Schmitty & Pudge are becoming America’s real live virtual pets.

Besides taking donations, Schmitty’s Healthy Do’s & Don’ts 2010 calendar along Schmitty’s signature New Yorkie products sold at Lee’s Art Shop and online at www.schmittysays.com are giving a portion of the proceeds to Bobbi & The Strays - a local no-kill animal shelter. Lee’s Art Shop is matching the funds raised during the “New Yorkie In The Window” event!

Just in time for the holidays!
Disney Santa Buddies on DVD!

Disney’s irresistible talking puppies return in an all-new heartwarming holiday adventure!
Take a fantastic journey with your beloved Buddies to the magical world of the North Pole! Join Budderball, B-Dawg, Rosebud, Buddha, and Mudbud in a touching twist on a Christmas classic. When Puppy Paws, the feisty son of Santa Paws, forgets

Unleash a stocking full of Christmas cheer for you and your family with this fun-filled film, featuring never-before-seen bonus materials. It’s sure to be a holiday classic for years to come!

ANYONE who loves dogs, will love this movie! 2 young children watched the movie with me, and they adored it! It's a kids movie, for sure. And lacks elements for adults. However - be warned - they show someone pulling the beard off Santa - and they talk about how Santa is not real - and is JUST A MAN. So if your child believes in Santa - this movie may not be a good choice just yet.

WATCH SANTA BUDDIES TRAILER ON YouTube!

This is an honest review - by law we must state that we recieved a free copy of the dvd from DogTime Media in compensation for posting a review of "Santa Buddies."

Another PetSmart Horror Story in Illinois

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - ANOTHER TRAGEDY!

A trip to PetSmart for grooming turned deadly for Lily the Yorkshire terrier when employees put her too close to a heater, the dog's owner claims in Madison County Arbitration Court.

Haley Nelson said she dropped off Lily at 1 p.m. on Feb. 22 and PetSmart employees negligently put the dog in a kennel next to a heater. Trapped, Lily's body temperature rose and PetSmart workers failed to recognize that she was extremely ill. Lily died of heat stroke and cardiac arrest and still had a body temperature of 106.2 degrees when Nelson picked her up that day at 6 p.m., according to the complaint.

Nelson seeks damages for medical bills, another dog, loss of companionship, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
She is represented by Christopher Donohoo of Wood River, Ill.

PETSMART really needs to do something about this. I wouldn't take my dog there if THEY PAID ME!

Yorkie Road Trip Cross Country!

I took my first big road trip last week, across country!

What a long ride that was! WHEW!

3 days on the road, Chicago down to Florida.

But my Gramma Pat spends winters in Florida, so we drove
her down and got her settled in.

On the way down, we stopped in Ohio, Kentucky,

Tennessee, and Georgia! I slept a lot in the car.

I saw the BIGGEST ORANGE in my life!
And came face to face with an ALLIGATOR!
YIKES!

I laid by the window a lot and enjoyed the sun. It was 90

degrees a couple days and much too hot for me!

On the way home, I rode in a plane! That was kind of scarey.

They made me ride in a bag and the nasty stewardess

on Continental wouldn't let me get on the seat with my dad.

That airlines is NOT very pet friendly.

Sure, they take your money, and make you ride under seat!

$125 EACH WAY mind you! Meanwhile on our flight,

a screaming baby, got to ride for FREE on his mothers lap.

I would call that DOG DISCRIMINATION!

I am glad to be home in Chicago -

but it's getting cold here.....

I think I will curl up in a ball and dream about Florida....

Another Pet Smart Horror Story

I really AM NOT trying to bash PET SMART,

but since our first article on a pet death at Pet Smart, SO MANY

employees and customers have come forward with their comments,

we feel it is important to share this information with
our thousands of monthly readers.

This came in today -

I worked for PetSmart for over 6 years. I quit a year and a half ago because I cannot work for a company such as theirs any longer. I do not agree with the principles that they have set for themselves and the company in the last 5 years. If you think that it is just the animals they do not care about then remember this, they care even less about their employees.

Oh, they have a survey they conduct every year where you get to say some of what you think, but little, if any of it, is heeded. Their goal is now to make money. To sell worthless training classes, to make money, to sell grooming services, and...to make money.
I happened to see documents, (these were real!), stating how many dogs groomers are expected to do in an 8 hour shift. Each groomer is expected to groom up to 11 dogs or more. If they do not meet this quota, they are hauled into the office and questioned why they are not grooming enough, and what are their plans to do more? Mind you now, this is 11 dogs to bathe, dry and groom in 8 hours, with a half hour lunch break, and two 15 minute breaks which are required by law, and to cover their own butts, they expect you to take them.
So, this is 7 hours grooming time. I ask you this then, HOW can any groomer SAFELY do this many dogs in this type of time frame? The pressure is on these people to sell, sell, sell. Not only grooming, but overpriced services like shampoo, tooth brushing, clogne, and other worthless crap you don't need or want.
In the store I worked in, they automatically tacked this on to your bill without asking, all so they could meet the quota that corporate expected, so they did not get yelled at for failing to meet it!At the end of every day, if a groomer does not meet his quota, he, or she, has to fill out a report stating how they are going to meet their requirements for the nest day, and the rest of the week. Still think they care most about your pet??

The mission of this company USED to be about people and pets. However I watched this focus completetly change over the years. If you knew what it is like to work for this company, and what really goes on behind the scenes, you would not shop there.

I will say though that in the store I worked at, the small animals and fish department was very well maintained, and high levels of quality were a requirement. That was due to the knowledge of the employees and manager of that department. However, now, with a new store director who is more concerned about climbing the corporate ladder, than providing a good working enviornment, I believe the whole store is failing dreadfully in employee morale. This also seems to be the new way to run the company as a whole, since this was not the only store where this type of thing goes on.

Two years before I quit, a statement was made to me, by someone rather high up in the company, who should not have said to me probably. "The time is now to get out of PetSmart. Changes are in the wind, and it is not going to be a good place for any one to work any longer. Don't believe me? Give it two years!"

He was right. I watched store directors quit, district managers quit, and others who truly cared about the employees were fired, and replaced with what they now have. These people let you know, you are expendable, plain and blunt.

This is not a good place to work, it's not a good place to shop, and certainly, NOT a good place to take your pet for grooming! Since I quit, I have never looked back, and I have never returned with my pets for any services they have to offer!

Yorkie Costumes for Halloween

Is your YORKIE dressing up for Halloween?!

My little Yorkie, used to like clothes - as she gets older

she really DOES NOT!

#2 is not a Yorkie, of course, but the costume

was so great, I thought, what a cool idea!

If you do choose to dress up your little boy or girl,

make sure the outfit does not constrain your pet.

Your pet needs to remain comfortable.

“Whether or not dogs like to be dressed up depends on the dog,’’ says Debrah Schnackenberg, vice president of the Animal Protection Division for the American Humane Association. “While the American Humane Association does not encourage dressing dogs, as long as it doesn’t pose any safety risk and the dog seems to enjoy wearing the latest fashions,

there’s no harm in dressing your pet.’’

However - “I’ve interviewed dogs about clothing, and most do not like clothes,’’ pet psychic Bridget Pilloud told me. “They think clothes are silly, and that they cause people to see them as cute instead of seeing their true nature.’’

Happy Halloween!

Coco Chanel and Miss Trixie Lee Deluxe

WOW - Summer just flew by didn't it?
I was so happy that this summer I got to spend some time
with Coco Chanel - the Original Yorkie that helped start this blog!
She lives in Michigan (in an amazing home!)
and is about 14 now, and not doing real well these days.
Her cataracts bother her a little, she has started having little seizures,
and at times, gets very aggitated and will SNAP!
But I was glad I got to meet her, even though she didn't want to bother
with me much! She is the matriarch! my idol! and a grand dame!

The last few weeks here in Chicago we had some great weather
and I was able to get out the the beach a few times!
I LOVE the beach! Especially meeting all the people.

Weather here got very cool this past weekend -
So I think our beach days may be done :(
Talk soon!
