10,000 years, but how the relationship evolved has never been clear.
Our canine friends might be descended from wolves,

but they don't have too much in common with the wild beasts.

All but two breeds of dogs have pink tongues.

Yorkie Sues PetSmart for Bad Grooming

I just hate taking my little Trixie to the groomer or the vet and leaving for any length of time. You just don't know what kind of care they are getting, Luckily, we have someone near us who now comes to the house to groom her and I am there to help.

In Virginia , a man has filed a lawsuit against PetSmart, claiming one of its groomers nearly killed his terrier puppy.

Jeff Dalton, who is an investigator with the Floyd County Sheriff's Office, filed the civil suit in County Circuit Court 2 weeks ago, naming PetSmart and groomer Chris Roop as defendants. Dalton is seeking $175,000 in damages.

According to the suit, Dalton took his Yorkshire terrier puppy, Chester, to the Christiansburg PetSmart to be groomed on Jan. 26. He was asked to return at 9 p.m. to pick up the dog.
He returned instead at 7 p.m. and was told that because of difficulties in grooming Chester, the grooming was incomplete. He was offered a discount.

An employee went to a back room to get Chester for Dalton. "At that time," the lawsuit states, "Chester appeared lifeless and was struggling to breath ."

When Dalton asked for information about Chester's difficulty breathing, he was told that Chester had been very "wiggly" during the grooming and had "finally given up," according to the lawsuit.
Dalton paid for the grooming and carried Chester to his car. Chester immediately began throwing up blood, he said.

Dalton went back inside the store and demanded to see a manager. A manager agreed to call Town & Country Veterinary Clinic, a 24-hour veterinary service. Dalton took Chester there.
According to the lawsuit, Dr. Kelly Burdette at Town & Country told Dalton she wasn't sure Chester would survive.

She found that Chester had received severe pulmonary contusions and significant bruising "which could have only been inflicted by cruel and deliberate force during the grooming," the lawsuit says.

Chester underwent surgeries and survived, "but will continue to suffer stress, anxiety, and a weakened pulmonary function," it reads.
Dalton later questioned the store manager about Chester's treatment. The manager, who is not named in the suit, "stated that its groomers were not adequately trained in the recognition of signs of stress in a dog" and told Dalton that PetSmart would retrain its groomers, according to the lawsuit. ( Remember the case last month, where an untrained groomer left the dog unattended and ended up drowning? )

A spokeswoman for PetSmart said the company doesn't comment on pending litigation.
Dalton said that Chester was 4 months old when the incident happened. Now, the puppy is nearly full-grown at 4 pounds, 7 ounces.

Dalton believes Chester would have died at PetSmart if he hadn't shown up two hours earlier than he was scheduled.
"His eyes were open but he was just lifeless," he said. "It was all he could do to get his breath."
Dalton said the veterinarian had to turn Chester upside down to drain the blood from his lungs.
Chester was kept at the clinic for four days, he said. The dog is doing better now, Dalton said, but coughs a lot and must be sedated to be groomed.

At a well-known and well-respected company such as PetSmart, he said, "they should be trained enough to know that, hey, this is a lot of stress on this little dog."

Luxating Patella and the Yorkie Yorkshire Terrier

Well, I had a bit of disturbing news today

from my vet....

When I first was examined at 12 weeks old,

they said I had luxating patella of my right knee...

now, at 10 months old, both of my knees

are bothering me a bit!

Luxating is a fancy word for dislocating. Patella is your dog's "knee", the joint on the front of her hind leg. So a luxating patella is a dislocating knee or trick knee, a knee that keeps slipping out of its socket. This can happen in yorkies with weak ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles. It can also happen in Yorkies whose kneecap groove is too narrow or shallow. The knee usually slips inwardly, toward her body, and locks so that your Yorkie can't bend her leg.

Suspect luxating patella if your Yorkie sometimes lifts one hind leg while she is running, or if she often moves both rear legs at the same time, like a hopping bunny. Sometimes the knee slips only for a few moments, then slides back into place. Sometimes the knee slips out and stays out, and your Yorkie will hold her leg off the ground and limp, perhaps tucking her thigh into her body. Luxation may occur in one knee, or in both. It is seen in many other toy breeds, and in both sexes, though it seems to be more common in females. No matter how firm the knees seem as puppies, toy dogs are liable to injure their knees.

Yorkie Dies While in Groomers Care

I never watch the news because there is so much

tragedy and drama in it, it's downright depressing.

And I get lots of leads to terrible tragic dog stories, that

I simply do not run, because who wants to read about

all the sadness? - But I came across this story today

and thought it was worth sharing, because it could

happen to anyone's dog....

On the East Coast this week, a dog owner is heartbroken after

her 3-pound Yorkshire terrier hung itself on a

leash after a "negligent" groomer left it alone to soak in a bathtub.

Groomingdales owner Lisa Boughton said her 21-year-old

assistant placed the terrier into a

special bathtub to soak in shampoo. The assistant, she said,

left the dog alone for a few minutes. She returned to find

the terrier strangled by the leash meant to secure it from

running away. The dog appeared to have leapt

from the tub, Boughton said.

Boughton said she believes the death won't hurt her business.

Firing her assistant, she said, "wouldn't accomplish anything

for me" because she needs the extra help.

"My customers will follow me anywhere ...

we're very sought after," said Boughton.

- That's not a very good attitude, I don't think!
I would guess that the accident will in fact hurt her business!

Dogs Can Get Electrocuted By Chewing Cords

My adorable sweet little Trixie, who is

9 months old, has been chewing through electrical

cords around the house! Luckily, she has not been

electrocuted...yet.

I don't know if this is beacuse she is still teathing??

She has plenty of rubber toys to chew on.

Any ideas on here to stop here?

Yorkie Turns Into Mummy in Illinois!

In Ancient Egypt- the mummification process was a technical and sacred ritual- done to preserve the body --but in Illinois- apparently someone accidentally did the same thing - without trying."My dad was in the crawlspace of my brother's house here and he was doing some electrical work and found it underneath in the crawlspace," Sara Supancic said.

It used to be Jasper- a Yorkshire terrier- that went missing in 1976. Now it's a mummy. So how did Jasper go from a dog to a mummified mutt? "Because in the crawlspace it's a cool dry area and there is no bacteria, no fungus, no bugs or anything to help decompose it, so basically it just kind of dried up and preserved how it is," Supancic said.

Supancic's brother checked the neighborhood and found out the former owners live next door. Obviously, they didn't want Jasper back, so Supancic had another idea. "I'm going to take it back to my classroom- show it to my students- have it on display because it's a one of a kind find." A find in really good condition considering "I think, especially in Southern Illinois, where it's so humid and we have so many bugs and everything that its just conditions had to be exactly right for this to happen and that's really unusual."

Besides the dog's size. - its smell makes it even more surprising. " It feels like paper mache- or it feels like a wasps nest- its just kind of dry papery- little bit harder than paper maybe.

It sounds kind hollow," Supancic said.

The Problem With Double Teeth in Yorkies....

When I was 6 months old, my daddies

took me to be spayed. At that time, the doctor found

that I had 3 baby that had not fallen out yet and there

were double teeth coming in also. So he removed them.

I am 8 months old - and unfortunately, since that procedure,

I had 4 more teeth come in on top of my

baby teeth that had to removed!

The doctor said, " The golden rule to follow is: There should never be two of the same tooth type occupying the mouth at the same time. By frequently checking your pet’s teeth between the ages of 14 to 24 weeks of age, any double presence of teeth will be detected and can be immediately corrected by a veterinarian. Never wait for the baby tooth to fall out by itself if you see even the slightest protrusion of the adult crown next to it."

And he advised my daddies to start my brushing

my teeth so I grow up with good oral hygeine!

Barbara Walters Wants a Yorkie!

OK, so this one takes the cake . . . whatever that means.

Me and my sister, Pudge were at B&N for a book signing

for Barbara Walters. My 2 legged folks were there to

get her fab new book, "Auditions" signed.

Pudge and I were there to give Ms. W. one of our

BARK THE VOTE postcards for her dog.

Well, not only did I have a chance to give Ms . Barbara our postcard,

but she gushed over us and started hugging Pudge.

Next thing you know - a 2 legged photographer said she

was from the Washington Post and takes all our names

(and a BARK THE VOTE postcard too!).

So, flash forward to the next day -

I'm half snoozing with the TV on "The View" when we

all hear Ms. Walters in playful alpha tones saying

"That was not my dog in the Washington Post picture with me this morning!"

I may be just a five pound pooch, but putting 2 + 2 together

and coming up 4 (I think?) - I knew "that dog" must be our little Pudge!

Get this - the caption under this gigantic picture that took up most of the front page of the WP's Style section says " . . . Barbara Walters with her pooch, Pudge at a book signing." Yikes! That's not Barbara's dog! Hey, Washington Post, do your homework! Arf-Arf !

As big a fan as we are of Barbara Walters - Pudge is not her dog and loves living with her two legged Mom & Dad and me very much. Pudge even wrote Ms. W. a note suggesting she have Pudge on "The View" to "right the wrong" of the Washington Post and tell her dog, Cha-Cha face-to-face to go to Bark the Vote to "vote", send in her Patriotic pooch pics . . .

even get her 2 legged friends to register to vote.

We also wrote the Washington Post (boy, are my paws tired!)

to try and get a correction and "bark" about BARK THE VOTE too.

But no word of a play date so far from Ms. Walters or The Washington Post.
