Yorkie in New York Needs Home
PLEASE HELP MITCHELL!
Poor little Mitchell; who could be so cruel?
The ten-year-old blind Yorkshire terrier is so afraid when he was picked up by New York City Animal Care and Control and brought to the Brooklyn shelter this past week.
Some miserable culprit had spray painted little Mitchell green on his face, in his eyes, and on his back soaking right into the skin of his caudal spine. (base of his spine) Mitchell was brought in on October 22, and is due out and ready for rescue on Sunday, October 25.
According to his medical notes, even though he is extremely stressed, Mitchell did allow handling although it is advised to move very slowly as this little guy must have been through more than most animal advocates even want to know. The emaciated, six-pound dog is heavily matted around his legs and face and has extensive dental issues, however no flea infestation or active parasites were noted.
A volunteer writes the following: "Mitchell is a 10 year old Yorkie mix who came in as a stray- matted and emaciated. During Mitchell's medical exam, it was noted that he is also BLIND. This little guy needs some TLC- Can you give him some?" When making inquiries about Mitchell, reference A1055686.
For more information on adopting from the New York City Animal Care and Control, click here. A Facebook page for Mitchell can be found here. To adopt from the General Adoption List, click here. To adopt from the At Risk List, click here. Please share Mitchell's story with friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives, and every life counts.

Yorkie Stops Bear Attack
A Vietnam War veteran says that his little Yorkshire Terrier helped him escape a vicious bear attack.
Larry Yepez, 66, said he startled a 200-pound black bear who was rummaging through his trash outside of his California home near Yosemite National Park.
The bear latched onto his arm, and Yepez tried punching him, but the animal wouldn’t let go. Yepez even kicked the bear off of him, but the bear came after him again.
That’s when Yepez’s dog started barking and distracted the bear. Wildlife crews are now looking for the black bear, who fled the scene.

Yorkie Dog Scams
Dog owners are warned to watch
out for an online scam in which missing or stolen pets are 'flipped' and
sold back through online classified adverts
A new scam
is on the rise on Craiglist as owners of missing dogs are finding their
beloved pets for sale on the classified ad site - and are then having to
buy them back.
The
practice, known as dog-flipping, either begins with a dog genuinely
being lost or escaping from a yard, or worse being stolen from the
owner.
Whoever ends up in possession of the dog then sells the pet for profit, usually through an online portal such as Craigslist.
A
family from Houston, Texas, the Lowes, found themselves victims of such
as scam when their 11-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Sushi, escaped from
their yard in December 2014.
The same day the family received a strange phone call asking if they were missing a dog, ABC reported.
When
the Lowes were unable to find Sushi, they redialed the number of the
person who had called them, who then denied any knowledge of the dog.
A
few weeks later, Kara Lowe, saw an advert on
Craigslist offering a dog for sale that looked just like Sushi, but now
named Sparkle.
Suspicious,
Kara contacted the seller, but this initial confrontation failed and
the trail went cold after the ad was removed from the site.
Seven long months went by and a second advert for the same dog appeared.
This time
Kara pretended to be an interested buyer and a meeting with the seller
was arranged last Friday in the parking lot of a Sam's Club in Cypress,
Texas.
Kara
brought along an animal rescuer friend, Kathy Vasquez, armed with a
microchip reader, but at first they were unsure it was Sushi.
'I didn't think it was her,' Lowe told ABC. 'Her coat was a different color. She'd been dyed.'
The dog also didn't seem to know her, but Kara pressed on and the sale went through for $250.
'It was priceless,' she said. 'I figured even if it wasn't Sushi, it was somebody's dog that we could save and try to return.'
Her
friend's microchip reader then confirmed that the dog was in fact
Sushi. By that afternoon Sushi was back at home playing with the Lowe's
children and other dogs

Yorkies ... Beware of big birds
NEVER leave your Yorkie outside unattended! Period!
My dog thinks she is tough at the beach when she chases seagulls - but beware.
Roo the Yorkshire Terrier suffered severe head wounds and a brain haemorrhage after a group of gulls attacked him while he was playing in the back garden of his owner’s home in Cornwall last Thursday.
Mother-of-four Emily Vincent, who owned Roo, said the little dog came running into the kitchen before collapsing in a pool of blood resembling a ‘murder scene’.
The family took the animal to the vet but his wounds were deemed too severe and he was put down.
The seagulls – which are herring gulls – had been nesting on the roof of Ms Vincent’s house in St Columb Minor. They are believed to have been trying to protect their nest when they attacked Roo.

Miniature Designer Dogs Unwanted
Pet charity Blue Cross warns shih-tzus, chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers, and pugs are now the most dumped dogs in Britain
Designer 'handbag' dogs made popular
by celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Simon Cowell are now the most
dumped in Britain, charity bosses revealed.
Research has revealed pocket-sized pets are now the most unwanted
across the country because owners don't realise they need as much
exercise as larger breeds.
As a result dogs such as shih-tzus, chihuahuas, Yorkshire terriers, and
pugs are now being given up in record numbers, according to the pet
charity Blue Cross.
The organisation believes this is
because the smaller breeds are seen as more of a fashion accessory and
people think they are easier to look after because of their size.
But when owners realise how much care, attention and exercise they need they decide they cannot cope and give them away. The study found the number of "handbag" dogs handed in to the Blue Cross has increased by 120 per cent in the last five years.
The charity is now urging potential owners to do their research properly before buying a dog, rather than following the latest celebrity trend.

Fly with an Emotional Support Animal
How to Fly with an Emotional Support Animal in the
Cabin of an Airplane
Do your nerves bundle up the minute you
step into an airport, more so into an airplane? You’re not alone! Millions of
people feel the same way you do, and some address their anxiety by bringing
along an ESA, otherwise known as an emotional support animal. Your pup may just
be the answer to your problems. Here’s what you can do before taking your ESA
with you on your next trip. If you’re looking for certification of service
dogs, you can find more information at Service Dog Certifications.
Prepare
Proper Documents
It is vital that your pet has the necessary
registration, emotional support animal
doctor letters, and identification to prove that it is a certified
emotional support animal, most especially to present to authorities who might
question you. Not all disabilities/mental illnesses merit having an ESA, so
your particular disability should appear on the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM-IV implying that your pet’s immediate
presence is necessary due to health matters. You may learn more about how and
whether or not you may acquire certification for an emotional support animal by
speaking to a psychiatrist. The moment you have all the right documents
supporting your ESA, you’re set to go!
Bringing
Your ESA on Your Next Flight
The first thing you should do before taking
your ESA on a flight is to inform the airline you’re flying that you’ll be
bringing your emotional support animal at least 48 hours before departure. They
might need you to fax or email letters written by a licensed mental health
professional. Don’t forget to bring your pet’s papers to prove its shots, as
well as a health certificate issued by a veterinarian, just in case.
To avoid being late for your flight, as you
may be questioned about your ESA, you might want to check-in online or leave
for the airport extra early. Ideally, you should be checked in at least 90
minutes before your flight. Have the proper equipment that will aid you in
holding and/or controlling your pet, such as a leash, harness, cage, or others.
Check to see that it’s comfortable enough for your pet to stay in/wear for the
duration of the flight as well!
While
in the Plane
Is your pet well-trained? A dog that yips
on the plane may be bothersome to other passengers, so a quiet, behaved pooch
who understands commands is usually mostly appreciated. As for dealing with
calls of nature, see to it that your pet urinates and defecates in a suitable
place before boarding the plane. You may want to fit a diaper on your pup to
lessen the chances of it making a mess while in-flight. Avoid giving your pet
food or water during the flight, but keep a bit with you in your carry-on to
give to your pet when you land. Remember to keep your animal with you at all
times, and position it (or its cage) in an area that doesn’t block emergency
exits. You may not be allowed to sit in certain rows of the airplane, but it’s
only to make sure of the accessibility, safety, and comfort of you and your
pet.
Still
Nervous?
In case you’re still nervous about or
during the flight, you may want to speak to a doctor/psychiatrist beforehand,
so you can get prescribed medication to alleviate your anxiety. Depending on
which airline you’re flying, it also helps to call the airline beforehand and
inform them that you’re an “anxious flyer”, as the airline’s flight attendants
become more aware about your situation and may check up on you every now and
then.
Once you’re on the flight, take 10 deep breaths; each inhaling for the
count of 5 heartbeats, keeping it in for 7, and exhaling for 9 to relax
yourself. Once you’ve done that, try distracting yourself with your favorite
music, book, or video game. Before you know it, the flight will be over, you’ll
have reached your destination!

Johnny Depp's Yorkies Escape Death
Facing the threat of imminent death, Johnny Depp’s dogs Pistol and
Boo fled Australia for the United States on Friday after Australia’s
agriculture minister angrily accused the Hollywood actor of sneaking the
pups into the country.
A Department of Agriculture officer escorted the Yorkshire terriers from Depp’s home – where they had been temporarily quarantined – to the airport on Friday evening, Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said in a statement. The tiny outlaws promptly boarded a flight to California, just hours before a government-imposed deadline that the dogs leave Australia or be euthanized.
The hastily-arranged departure came after Joyce accused Depp of smuggling the dogs aboard his private jet when he returned to Australia on April 21 to resume filming of the 5th installment in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie series at Gold Coast Studios.
Australia has strict quarantine regulations to prevent diseases such as rabies spreading to its shores. Bringing pets into the country involves applying for a permit and a quarantine on arrival of at least 10 days.
The Agriculture Department told Depp and his wife Amber Heard on Wednesday that they had to send Pistol and Boo back to the United States within 72 hours or the animals would be euthanized. And they did.

Coyotes Stealing yorkies in New York and New Jersey
WARNING - DO NOT LET YOUR YORKIE OUT UNATTENDED!
Coyotes and large winged birds CAN GRAB THEM in an instant.
An attacking coyote grabbed a Yorkshire terrier and retreated to the woods of suburban New Jersey with the dog hanging from its jaws on Tuesday night, according to the Randolph Township Police.
With both New Jersey and nearby New York City residents reporting an increased coyote presence this spring, local cops notified the state Division of Fish and Wildlife about the incident, police said.
Animal observers noted the first sighting of a coyote in New Jersey in 1939, but state officials notched only 29 other reports of the critters in the Garden State in the 40 years afterward, according the agency. Now, the “extremely adaptable” animals have popped up in almost 400 municipalities across all 21 of the state’s counties, agency officials say.

Dog Flu Spreading
A canine flu outbreak has affected hundreds of pets throughout the
Midwest. The canine flu has been reported in four states, including
Wisconsin, with many cases in Chicago and northern Illinois.
Symptoms include:
People can carry it on their skin for up to 12 hours and on their clothes for 24 hours.
The canine flu outbreak in Chicago has prompted officials to tell dog owners to postpone trips to dog parks and doggy daycare centers until the worst of the outbreak passes. Dogs younger than one year and older than seven are most at risk.
Symptoms include:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Variable fever
- Clear nasal discharge that progresses to thick, yellowish-green mucus
- Rapid/difficult breathing
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy

Although it's called a canine influenza, health officials said the virus
also infects cats. No evidence exists that the virus is transmissible
from dogs to people.
The virus has sickened more than 1,100 dogs in the Midwest, probably
spread rapidly when pet owners boarded their dogs while on spring
vacations, according to the Associated Press.

Yorkie Haircuts
It's haircut day! I don't mind, I have a very sexy male hairdresser, who pampers me and kisses me!
Most Yorkies keep their ears pointed - but my dads like mine to grow out and be "whispy".
I think they call my cut a Westie Cut. The Westie Cut is a great style for active Yorkies! In this style, the entire body is trimmed to leave only a few inches of hair, though you can make it longer or shorter depending on your personal preference. The beard is rounded. The fur around the forehead is often shaved short or pulled into a topknot to allow your Yorkie maximum eyesight.

Yorkshire Terrier and Baby
You know how your dog tucks himself in, getting the blanket JUST RIGHT?
In this cute video, while the little tot is sleeping peacefully, Misty (the Yorkie) starts poking around, looking like she's trying to wake the peaceful little bubba up. Curious to see what she was going to do next, the baby's watchful parents pulled out a camera and started recording. What they caught of video is absolutely adorable! Apparently, Misty didn't think her new little human was cozy enough, and proceeds to tuck the baby in nice and secure.

Dogs on Death Row
It just breaks my heart. How can someone be SO LAZY, to just give up your dog and not even TRY to find a new home for the pet? Just dump it off and not care about the dog's feelings. SICK!
It happens everyday, dogs are given up and their hearts are broken. Some are adopted out and many out there are put to sleep.
That's what happened to Miley, who was devastated when her owners surrendered her at at Los Angeles pound this week. Miley wouldn't raise her head, terrified at where she was she sat in the corner. Marley, who was another owner surrendered did her best to cheer Miley up. Trying to play with Miley and to get her to lift her head. Marley has already been dumped twice at the shelter, but has a big enough heart to try to cheer up her new friend Miley.
Both dogs are currently on a tight timeline to find a home before euthanasia as the shelter has limited space. Please contact North Central Animal Care and Control Center at (888) 452-7381, Miley's ID # is A1530442, and Marley's ID # is A1367215.
YORKIES GET DUMPED OFF TOO. Please consider adopting a Yorkie, that needs a home??
